For the past four years we have truly enjoyed being able to provide you with multiple ways to get the word out about your music. In this regard we are implementing some changes that you need to be made aware of.
Surely you have all heard about recent actions taken by some organizations in an attempt to combat the spread of unlicensed copyrighted material, namely unlicensed copyrighted music. In their current form, GlobalBeatz's music hosting and download services are designed in such a way that they potentially place GlobalBeatz at a liability should any unlicensed copyrighted material be accessible via the site.
Due to legislation, legal action by organizations throughout the industry citing copyright concerns, and our respect for those concerns, GlobalBeatz has made the decision to remove site functionality that facilitates hosting and downloading of DJ mixes effective as of January 29, 2007.
Be assured that after about four years of providing these valuable services to up and coming artists this has been an extremely difficult decision to make. It was made only after a lot of thinking, internal deliberation, and meetings with legal counsel.
Some of you may know that there are laws designed to protect services like those we're removing, most notably the Digital Millenium Copyright Act of 1998 (DMCA). While we believe that we are compliant and protected by the DMCA's Safe Harbor provisions, the nature of the services we're removing makes us a target for potential legal issues regardless.
As much as we'd like to stand our ground and let the law work for us, quite frankly GlobalBeatz staff is comprised of people with budding, demanding careers unrelated to site. We simply don't have the resources to appropriately respond to the potential issues that we are exposed to by providing these services.
Moving forward we would like to find a way to provide simliar services working with copyright holders to find a solution that is both mutually agreeable and relieves service providers like us from being targets of litigation. However, this is very complicated and this goal has not yet been realized.
We have some great ideas for GlobalBeatz that we may be implementing in the next few months, and if the stars align just right, GlobalBeatz may just bring back some of that fire it had a few years ago.
If you have specific questions about any of this please let us know and we will respond as best we can.
Keep getting your music heard, and keep on rockin' in the free world.
