I prefer a happy medium but as they say opposites attract.

Same here.
If you are exactly the same then things can probably be a bit boring and you may also find yourself arguing more than you might think
Complete opposites would have nothing in common and you wouldn't be able to enjoy time together because each would want different things.

cheers mate.
gotta be different. i tried going out with sketchy creative raver type birds, but while they were good fun, the whole thing got a bit wearing and intense. my current girl of 6 years is well square, has a totally different background to me, and has different interests. i think i need her to keep me sane! i doubt id be alive and well if it wasnt for her calming influence.

to have a calm partner if you're the opposite is good and v.v. Think that creates chemistry.
But regarding beliefs/ values and stuff, think its easier if you're similar. I vote happy medium!

me n my partner r the same but different! we like similar things, eg music parties (where we met) drinking, have the same oppinions to a point, and have the same future goals, such as wanting to live in the country, have a small holding, travel a bit etc, but the way we do things are so opposite it works, where I fall down he picks it up and vice versa. We work so well its almost strange.

Think you need some similar interests but only some - just some common ground to do things together really. For instance, me and my lass both have an interest in metal and thrash but she hates dance music and techno - as long as we have the metal in common then end of the day we have a mutual interest and options to go out.
On the personality level I tend to feel the same really applies - some things in common means you understand one another - but sometimes you need someone who has different opinions or comes at things in a different way to really deal with and get through a problem - for me the reason we are currently working well together and can see this one lasting a long time (though it is in the early stages at present so we shall see whether or not I'm right!) is that we both believe that we have a positive effect on each other and where we have personality faults the other person in the relationship seems to help fill those gaps and holes and help with the personality faults that are their making us both better people and both much happier in and with ourselves than before - the whole two become one thing, where the sum of the two parts is greater than either of us cud be witout the others influence - and to get back to the original question I dont think you get that if you are too similar.

Dunno about a happy medium... What about a laughing large....:laugh_at::laugh_at:
Sorry... Bad joke jumped into head, and wouldn't go away...
Seriously though - different is better - if your partner is the same as you, there's no joy of discovery...

A happy medium seems the best result. If your partner was exactly the same then I think you'd both get bored ... whereas someone who was challenging you all the time would also get boring, just for different reasons.

Had a partner who was completely different (in all tastes inc. music n the party scene) and..... well it didnt work out - 4 years down the line I felt stiffled coz I gave up much too much...... def go for a happy medium!

Not really sure to be honest, i am very much like my girlfriend as we have similar interests. i think its more about how your personalities bond, we got on really well from when we first started speaking to each other.

you've got to have some common ground, otherwise there's nothing to go on, but difference is nice, that way you each bring something new to the other
Tank Girl
22-10-2007, 12:23 PM
Mr Tank and I have loads in common, most music, films, politics, sense of humour, morals, etc
but we also have different interests,
for example going to a 'rave / dance music' party is (in his own words)
'my worst fucking nightmare and no I dont want to go'
- so luckily when I'm able and have other people to go with I go without him (even 3- 4 day events) and I think our grounding helps with this .... so he wont be coming to the PV meet up as he's already refused, and to be honest he would hate it and be a miserable bastard as he'd feel uncomfortable so its best for both of us that there is a good level of trust!

i wish i'd married someone who...
hated art
liked music played quietly
like TV dinners
worried a lot
hated sex
didn't like getting muddy or wet while going for a walk / bike ride
what a weird question. pointless even
