Geriatric crime wave - watch out for those OAPS!

some quite nasty crimes committed by these oldsters..

there was even a prison officer in the grauniad saying they need to put in stuff in the prison hospital like chairlifts, zimmers, defibrilators and other stuff for oldies' care and HMP was becoming like an old peoples home

he said not only have they got all the 70s "hard men" criminals who are doing life stretches now reaching their 60s, there is a real increase in pensioners of both genders committing serious crime, particularly domestic violence

and they whinge about us youngsters

Bond villain held over wife death

An actor who starred as a James Bond villain is being questioned by police after his wife was found murdered. Irvin Allen was arrested after the body of Chamlong Allen, 48, was discovered in a lock-up close to their home in Ladbroke Grove, west London.

Police said a post mortem confirmed she died of multiple stab wounds.

The actor starred as evil henchman Che Che in On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Stromberg Sailor in The Spy Who Loved Me.

Mr Allen, who also took roles in Stanley Kubrick's Lolita and The Revenge Of The Pink Panther, lived with his wife and three children in a flat in Adair Road.

The 6ft 5in star, now aged in his 60s, had retired to run the Mr Tasty food stall in Portobello Road market.

Police confirmed a man arrested in connection with the death is being held in custody and being questioned by Serious Crime Directorate detectives.

the centre mentioned below has a minimum intake age of 60...

Patient died after care home assault

A WOMAN suffering from a heart and lung condition died after being assaulted by a fellow patient at a Sand-hurst care home.

Yvonne Newell, 62, had suffered from mental health problems since the 60s and had lived at Harts Leap Care Centre in Sandhurst for many years.

An inquest into Mrs Newell's death at Windsor Guildhall on Thursday heard that a fellow patient, who was on a trial period at the private hospital, had punched Mrs Newell and pulled her hair. The patient had been on one-to-one observation - a member of staff had to be near her for 24 hours a day.

The inquest heard the patient had been left with care assistant Beata Hrycyna while another member of staff was absent. But the patient left the dining room and assaulted Mrs Newell, who was sitting in the doorway to her room nearby.

Elizabeth Luswazi, a mental health nurse, who was also in the dining room, told Berkshire Coroner Peter Bedford she had seen the patient leave and followed her. She said the patient started punching Yvonne in the face.

She said: "When I was nearby she started grabbing her hair. I was trying to take her hands off her head."

She said Mrs Newell's face and lips were blue and she had slight bleeding from one nostril.

Other members of staff described helping to prise the patient's hands from Mrs Newell's hair and leading her away while other staff tried to resuscitate the injured pensioner.

Pathologist Dr Robert Chapman told the inquest Mrs Newell was suffering from heart disease, emphysema, bronchitis and the start of pneumonia.

In a report he said the extent of her natural disease was that she could have died at any time. But he told the inquest pain, anxiety or physical activity could cause someone with this degree of disease to collapse.

The coroner ruled that Mrs Newell had died of exacerbation of chronic pulmonary disease with an abnormal increase in the size of her heart.

He said: "Her death was probably accelerated by a short time by the anxiety and physical activity suffered in the assault which otherwise did not inflict injuries that would be expected to be fatal."
an old age chav from the thames valley area!

* At 9.55pm on 29 November, a 44-year-old Newbury man was walking along the towpath in Butson Close, Newbury, when he passed a man walking four dogs on leads. As he passed, one of the dogs snapped at the victim’s ankle. The victim was not injured and no damage was caused to his clothing but he remonstrated with the dog owner about the actions of his pet.
The offender then pushed the victim and threatened to push him in the canal.
The offender is white, aged 60-65 and 5ft 8 to 5ft 10. He had slightly balding grey hair and was of stocky build. The dogs are described as black and white terriers, possibly Jack Russells.

at least here the kids who give fire fighters grief are just ignorant. This man is clearly old enough to know better.....

France nabs gun-toting pensioner An 81-year-old Frenchman has been given a one-year suspended jail sentence for firing a hunting rifle at helicopters dropping water on a forest blaze. David Thiel opened fire on 21 July when the low-flying helicopters disturbed his afternoon nap near Grasse in the south of France, court sources said.

During his arrest the man swore at the policemen and hit them with saucepans.

Fifteen hunting rifles were confiscated from his home. The helicopters were beyond the range of the rifle he fired.

The judge, quoted by the AFP news agency, said Mr Thiel should not have shot at water-bombing helicopters "as if they were wild ducks".

He was convicted on weapons charges and for resisting arrest. The south of France, languishing in a prolonged heat wave, has been plagued by forest fires in recent weeks.

Escaped prisoner hunted over raid
An escaped prisoner is being hunted after a raid in which a shop manager was tied up and held at knifepoint. Police want to trace Robert Millar Sharp in connection with the robbery at the charity shop on Bedford Street, Bognor Regis, West Sussex, on Saturday.

The 61-year-old, who has a Scottish accent, absconded from Ford Open Prison in Arundel last week.

Sussex Police said the 19-year-old shop manager was shaken but unharmed. The robber got away with a sum of money.

Phoned a friend

Details of the amount stolen are not being disclosed.

The shop worker raised the alarm by phoning a friend.

Police have not revealed the reason Sharp was jailed. He is described as white, 5ft 10in tall, of heavy build and with short grey hair.

Anyone who knows his whereabouts is urged to get in touch.

A Sussex Police spokesman added that Sharp had been working at the charity shop for eight weeks as an assistant, arranged by the Prison Service.

this is a sad fact

the voluntary sector is increasingly put upon by govt agencies to deal with those people that they are paid to rehabilitate

voluntary work can be a great way for people to move themselves on

but the charities need people who have something to offer, other than problems!

the job centre, mental health services, supportive housing schemes etc etc etc ad infinitum run out of ideas for their clients and dump them on the underfunded voluntary sector. this sector can have great result at building people's confidence, getting them a current reference, providing training and work experience, giving people a chance to try something new and meaningful and much more...

but the self same govt bodies who are well paid to provide these experiences aren't willing to share their 'pot of gold' to provide the necessary funds / support to make these placements successful

knowing what the French are like, particularly when in an emotional state that bit did make me laugh....

Actually out of all the criminal codgers he was probably the least worst (its only in movies that people bring down helicopters with small arms), and his punishment seems proportionate.

Thankfully no one was hurt but there could easily have been kids or other bystanders watching the helicopters putting out the blaze at risk of being hit by stray rounds.

The loss of his rifles (they aren't cheap, and like a bicycle or a fishing rod they are customised and adjusted to the needs of the owner) will probably deter him from trying such as stunt again.

In many other countries (including the UK) the cops could have actually shot him, even just on the suspicion he could have been carrying a concealed pistol.

Even if an OAP can't swing a punch as quickly (and I've found another case today of one old man killing another with a single punch), they can still pull a trigger...

check this one - never mind chavs and hoodies, its grandad and grannies doing big time crime!

what did really piss me off is they initially blamed local kids or other young people for killing the old bloke (who was a decent chap) and torching his house and it was his own age group all along..

I'm getting a story like this at least every week now - for every time the daily mail claim youths are getting out of control it seems the old people are just as bad

Quote:
Jealous ex 'hired hitman to kill'

A retired schoolteacher hired a hitman to kill the husband and a friend of his former lover, a court was told. Brian Lawrence said he wanted Christine Watson's husband, Brian, run down and her friend mauled by a "killer dog" or poisoned, Reading Crown Court heard.

Mr Lawrence, of Deacons Lane, Hermitage, Berkshire, is also accused of killing another friend of Mrs Watson, 69-year-old Deryk Cox, in 2003.

The 63-year-old denies murder and soliciting to murder.

Home set alight

Prosecutor Neil Moore said Mr Lawrence was "insanely jealous" and "obsessed that no man was going to stand in the way of his relationship with (Mrs Watson)", whom he had been seeing for three years between 1999 and 2002.

The court was told how he first met the hitman at the Hilton Hotel in Chieveley, Berkshire, in November 2004.

In a series of meetings with the man, known only as Trevor, Lawrence agreed to pay £3,000 for him to kill Mr Watson, with half paid as a deposit and half to be paid afterwards.

He also asked if it would be possible to hire a dog that would maul Frank Jose as he worked marking out lines on a rugby pitch, the court heard.

What Mr Lawrence did not know was that Trevor was an undercover police officer who was taping their series of meetings.

Victim 'battered'

Giving evidence on Thursday at Reading Crown Court from behind a screen to protect his identity, Trevor denied defence claims that Mr Lawrence's ideas were simply "fantasies" which he had encouraged.

He said: "It is not for me to know what was in Mr Lawrence's mind but the impression I formed was that he wanted both Mr Watson and Mr Jose to be killed."

Mr Lawrence was arrested on the day Mr Wilson was to be killed, 10 November, 2004.

The prosecution also claims he battered Mr Cox to death and set his home in Caversham, Reading, on fire, on 11 May 2003.

The trial continues.

Man ordered out of hospital bed
A man who has been in hospital for almost three years, despite needing no medical treatment or care, has been ordered to leave by the High Court. The 72-year-old, known as Mr X, was given 14 days to leave the Finchley Memorial Hospital in north London.
He was also ordered to pay £10,000 to cover the cost of eviction attempts.
He was admitted with mobility problems in December 2002 but Barnet Primary Care Trust (BPCT) said since May 2003 he has not needed medical care.
Owain Thomas, counsel for BPCT, told the judge it was the first time a hospital authority had sought a possession order against a patient.
He said the court action had been launched as a "last resort" after the man's repeated refusals to leave.

so much for oldies being more "socially concious". `how many people <60 years old use mobility buggies?

Blind victim of hit-and-run buggy

A blind woman has been left housebound after a hit-and-run incident involving two electric mobility buggies. The 50-year-old was walking with a white stick, in New Milton, Hants, when her stick was hit by one of the buggies as the second sped past her.
Neither driver stopped to aid the woman who was struck outside the Rydal pub.
The woman suffered a broken wrist which will confine her to her home for two weeks and her guide dog has gone into temporary care until she recovers.
A police spokesperson said: "The woman heard the sound of what she recognised as two electric mobility buggies heading towards her from the market area.
"The second collided with her stick. The stick went rigid and then sprung back, hitting her hard on the left wrist causing it to break."
Police have said anyone who saw the incident in Station Road should contact them.

I once had a saturday job in a local supermarket... ; our head security guard was a nearly 7 foot tall black guy who was also head bouncer of many of the local clubs.

The only time I have ever seen him actually look worried was on opening up the store when the big door stuck due to dodgy locks and the old people were outside (at about 08:30) waiting to buy their cigs and booze; some were actually tapping on the door with sticks and umbrellas.

Pair arrested over burglary spree

Last updated: 18/03/2009 16:11:00
A MAN and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of burglary today after a number of offences committed across Suffolk and Essex.

The 58-year-old man and 63-year-old woman, both from Stowmarket, are thought to have committed at least a dozen burglaries.

They are currently being questioned by officers at Bury St Edmunds Police Station.

A 63-year-old man from Weeting in Norfolk has also been arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods. He is in custody at Bury Police Station.
I think this might be linked to a barn full of stolen goods recently discovered outside Stow. amongst the haul were two old style gramophones, a CB radio and a folding bicycle - perhaps they were planning a OAP rave

there have been actual warnings from both Suffolk Constabulary and the manufacturers of mobility scooters about illegal derestricted models capable of 10-15 mph being used on the local roads (with at least one fatality)

the speed limits for mobility scooters vary from nation to nation and it is common practice amongst the older population to remove the restrictors (I've actually heard plausible rumours of these vehicles being raced by old men in some areas...)

I have certainly seen one in Reading do 15mph as that was the speed I passed it on my bicycle (which has am accurate speed display).

Last time I checked, Suffolk Constabulary were currently investigating one fatal and one injury RTC involving mobility scooters crashing into other elderly pedestrians, and were even considering giving safety advice in areas where they are common..

tbh same safty laws (or at least some saft laws) should apply to any vhc and if the person driving it can't even walk due to old age then that poses even more of a danger to the public if they are doing them speeds as they may not be able to controll the vhc sufficiently enough due to artharitis or some other affliction that may impare your ability to drive once you reach a certain age.

the safety laws do apply to mobility scooters and their users are not above the law, which is what the East Anglian constabularies are going to start explaining a bit more robustly to the older population now they've actually started to run each other over..

I started this thread in jest in 2005, ironically I've since ended up moving to an area with a very large elderly population and my day job is to build databases and comms systems to keep tabs on old people (this is not as sinister as it sounds, as it is important that patients in elderly homes or requiring home carers get the services they expect and deserve and good records are kept of this, as well as their medical conditions and treatments).

but there really is a problem with older people commiting crimes and anti-social behaviour for the same reason as youths - they often get bored and have little to occupy themselves and unfortunately there is a big problem with domestic abuse and racial crimes with older men, many of whom are very angry the unconditional power a white male once had is under challenge in modern multicultural British society.

One reason (the real reason?) that Ronnie Biggs and that Libyan bomber were let out of their respective prisons was because both were old, terminally ill and the cell space is always needed for people from that age group - if you look at the crimes in this thread they are all fairly serious ones what warrant a spell in jail...

these local yokels allegedly decided to "keep their crime in the family"..

Quote:
AN 85-year-old Suffolk woman is facing allegations of being involved in a fraud conspiracy.

It is believed the allegations against Doris Winifred Aves are linked to the case of her son David Aves, who is due to stand trial at Ipswich Crown Court on November 9.

Mrs Aves, of Freewood Street, Bradfield St George, near Bury St Edmunds, is scheduled to appear at the same court for a preliminary hearing of her case four days later.

She is listed to appear with co-accused 52-year-old Christopher Skelhorn, who is also facing an accusation of conspiracy to defraud.

The charges related to the period between April 18, 2007, and June 26, last year.

Mrs Aves and Skelhorn, of Thetford Road, Ixworth, were summonsed to appear before Bury St Edmunds Magistrates' Court on August 21 where the charges were laid against them.

They re-appeared at the same court last Friday when the case was committed to Ipswich.

No pleas have been entered at this stage. Mrs Aves and Mr Skelhorn are currently on unconditional bail.

At a previous hearing in May, David Aves denied accusations of perverting the course of justice, along with 16 charges of theft and 12 counts of fraud. He is also accused of three offences of contravening a disqualification order disallowing him from being a company director.

The 51-year-old, who has the same address as his mother, is alleged to have conned a large five-figure sum out of companies and individuals.

The theft and fraud charges relate to the alleged hiring, selling and buying of agricultural machinery and other vehicles.

Ipswich Crown Court was told it was believed the total amount of money involved in the allegations was around £50,000-£60,000 and that it was certainly no more than £100,000.

Among the accusations that David Aves faces is one of making a false representation to the civil division of the Court of Appeal in London in a letter from solicitors.

He is also charged with three counts of contravening a disqualification order made at Norwich Crown Court on May 18, 1998, which prohibits him from becoming a company director.

It is alleged David Aves was a director of three companies, Trotter Independent Trading Ltd, TWT Transport Ltd and Bury Transport Ltd after this date.

The theft and fraud charges relate to the period between December 14, 2006, and October 12, 2007.
