DE : Actual cat rave

Some German nature filmmakers found lots of cats at a big catnip plant (presumably the cats were the locals pets and simply knew about this spot)

I have let my German get apallingly rusty (and this may even be in a local dialect/grammar rather than standard German), but from what I can make out of the commentary it makes the film even funnier, the reporter is describing it exactly like how youths attending illegal raves were described on British TV

it starts off by mentioning how "your beloved house pets get up to many things no one knows about"

What REALLY Happens to Cats on Catnip

---
Last Night was an A1, tip-top, clubbing, jam fair. It was a sandwich of fun, on ecstasy bread, wrapped up in a big bag like disco fudge. It doesn't get much better than that. I just wish that I could control these *fucking mood swings!*

the vets have researched it and found no side effects

in that film, the big tomcat (what clearly looked like a alpha male) was getting so trashed he was drooling, even those kittens seemed to have eventually stopped fighting over the catnip and were rolling about

and the sort of modern Germans what make nature docs are usually really full on about animal rights so if they thought it was bad some yoghurt weaver type dude with a beard probably would have shouted "Achtung Katzen! Raus! Raus! Raus! Keine Katzenminzen für Sie! Es ist gefarlich für die Gesundheit!"

Those cats are doing a better job of self-regulating their drug use than humans. TBH I think they are the only species in the EU allowed to consume plant-based recreational drugs in this manner!

haha ATTENTION CATS, QUICK QUICK QUICK! CAINE THE CATAMINE FO SHO! IT IS GARFIELD FOR THE GOOD HEALTH!

the thing is even in germany the reseach into drugs of any kind is geared more towards humans .. as it is humans doing the research .. and more cash goes into this that animal drug research. alltho there is a quoter that gets divisioned off to that field, tracking back onto the early reaseasrch of mdma in germany, e was deamed allmost compleatly harmless at first .. mabey 5 years down the line cat nip will turn out to be a massive fuck up in the cats of this generations lives!

nah I think the cats are smarter than even German scientists - there are plenty of warnings about plants toxic to cats but they have been enjoying catnip for centuries without ill effect.. they take what they need, recover and then go on their way - many humans could learn from this!

the stuff apparently works on humans too for reducing aches/pains and may have a similar effect to marijuana...

well canabis isn't all that good in most cases in my opinion ... people say it has pain reliving effects ... but there are alot better things out there that are safe that relive pain imo .... there are drugs (opiates) that are refined to perfection .. ie. they give no "pleasure" but have really good analgesic qualitys .... i think all the people that claim weed is a good pain killer just want to get stoned .. bar the small minority that are immune to other options.

thats true, which is why in ancient times people also used catnip (slightly weaker) for this same purpose.

The cat's trip only lasts for 10 mins, then they have to come back 2 hours later but most cats presumably find other things to do (like eating, sleeping etc). Never heard of a cat getting addicted to catnip (and I once worked for a govt organisation what looked after the environment and had access to some of the most bizzare and obscure nature/wildlife-related documents). Some cats aren't even affected by it!

the diferance is cats dont have to go to work the next day ... they dont have complex relataionships/ties like we do .... a cat can go get mash up on cat nip and have no consiquenses to pay .. where as we as humans have other stupid shit to deal with after ...

Looks interesting - maybe I will do it for my cats midwinter treat

Not sure about the toluene not being inherently toxic though - I wouldn stand around inhaling those fumes anyway

I'm a carnivore and by no means a hardcore animal rights protestor (I very begrudingly accept minimal animal testing for the benefit of human and veterinary medicine but would like to see alternatives wherever possible), and TBH the above seems like a rather unethical unregulated animal experiment which I certainly wouldn't subject my pet or any other persons pet to.

Toluene is nasty stuff as well, why not just let the kitty have the catnip? If you had the choice of natural food/products against chemically processed crap, what would most of you take?
