Hmm,

I recently had to go on a "Political Correctness" course through work.
(3 days of role playing, debates, etc -OMG!)

Amongst other things we discussed was the term "pikey". I've been using that as a general term of abuse for years, like chav etc.

However, I'm now of the opinion it is, or could be seen as, a racist term. It marginalies a whole section of society based largely on predudices based on racial or cultural sterotypes.

That doesnt sit very well with me, so I try not to use that term too often.

Safe, l had a bad accident when l went camping once, l fell off my mountain bike at high speed and my knee was messed up and my hands were (the bike was fine lol). Some ppl at the campsite, who l think might have been Dutch travellers made me eat some food and made me take £10 that they offered me so that l could get a taxi to the nearest train station instead of cycling there when my stay was over!

The good honest bit seems to also go out of the window when your selling a claped out merc 'camper' thats one step from the scrap yard for £1800 to the weekend festival goer who thinks your a good honest new age traveler.

the term pikey refers to a certain type of irish travellers, not all travellers are pikeys, irish travellers are the most ruthless (aparently) and cause the most troble although you do get welsh english and scottish travellers who can be just as bad.

i worked with gypsies new age, travellers before and a lot of them have been very sound but a lot them are also cunts,

sayting all this i would of done exactly the same to that bloke because it would of been propa funny, plus if he was being mouthy at least it shut him up.

Hmmm Dunno what most people call a pikey... but I have seen the meaning change in the last 5 yrs or so. It used to be used to describe a gypsy type traveller as opposed to Hippy type... Sort of another word for 'Did'.

Recently it has been taken up by free party crews to mean a fair few different things!

I have lived on site for about 12 years, and up til about 5 or 6 yrs ago it used to be used to describe gypsy types (I have been on REAL gypsy sites before now (brief visit !!!) and believe me it IS like snatch!!! - Even got offered a bit of the cow they work cooking... last of the one they had nicked... lol!
