Question What Made You Choose Your Screen Name?

always wondered what makes people choose their screen names...

A couple of years ago - I was helping some people sort out the power in a large building they were in - to do this you have to identify and trace the distribution boards (fuse boxes) and their sub circuits (what they connect to). in large premises there are a lot of them, so its useful to make notes when doing this..

Anyway I'd written down on a sheet of paper

A/RYB1 - 6A - General Lighting

This is an electricians term for the house lights of any building - and usually the first circuit you check as it doesn't use a lot of current and won't make such a big "bang!" if its short-circuited (plus it means you can see what you are doing)

Anyway I thought it would make a good screen name as I try to "shine a light" on things when issues are being discussed and provide reliable facts and advice. (It also means if nosey people google my screenname they get a load of info about lamps and other 'leccy stuff rather than anything that would give me away too much :D )

Its sometimes mis-spelt as "lightning" - easily done I suppose, and a previous avatar I used (the electric hazard symbol) increased this confusion; but sparks and flashes are something I usually try to avoid (they mean short circuits and other hazards!)

but what made you think of yours?

my name is well old and doesnt quite make sense....when i had to log onto computers at 14 in school, the password was bits of your name, then a number...mine was ausmal1668 or summat and me and my mates got stoned and were playin around with the names, so ausmal became uuzmal, and it stuck! over the next couple o years, the mal dropped off, and every one in school called me oooze, but i was writin graf and didnt want lots of 'u's, an changed the spelling to use, because of that the pronounciation is different for when people met me, but most of my crew still call me uuuz....random and boring, see...

wierd thing was, by the end of school, only a couple o people knew how i got the name, so in loads of my goin away messages was weird suggestions as to why i was called it....that i used girls, oozed like toothpaste (pisstakes, as im not like that at all) or that i was well use full, or had many uses, which i obviously like more!

liked general's tho, i thought it would be summat like that :)

Cool

My name is sambo...and i added the 303 bit cos i really like those roland tb303s in acid techno.
my name on squat juice is auntydrugs. i thought that was amusing - have got quite a lot of abuse on that site though due to being a bit aunty-ish. Think i just take on another persona over there and get on my high horse. Cant help it though, everyone seems so like they need a word of friendly advice but it comes out all fogeyish. Nevermind...old fogeys like raving too har har.

I chose my nick because although I have my own ideas, this site was always meant to be about communication in general and others people's opinions rather than my own...

From the manual: 'User Reputation' in its simplest form is a ranking of your user's benefit to your forum. Its basis comes from the opinions of all of your forum users that choose take part in it.

Mines a bit lame. It's the name of the rig I'm a part of.

The usual screen name I use though is Totem. It comes from previously being a lanky git and having dark(ish) skin (I say previously because now i'm wider and not so dark... I haven't got shorter) So mates used to call me chief totem pole. Then I used Totem as a dj name and it has stuck since then.

Boring :(

My name is a really old nick (going back maybe 8-10 years)........it was more a general term used, rather than my specific nick...........we called a girl that was really into her gabber and that was a proper hardcore raver a 'gabba bitch'. I fell into said catagory so when I first logged into DC that was the name I used.

Not so into my gabber these days though, I have a lot wider music taste. My (visual) name on SJ is no longer G_b (is now raMia) and is just an anagram of my real name.

I used to be like that until I reached 22ish then suddenly my metabolism changed and I've put on loads of weight.

I think it probably had something to do with cutting out chemicals and increasing the beer intake.

I knew people ate strange stuff in the North and Scotland - but paperclips really are a bit much - the only edible office supplies I have encountered are the corn-based "packing peanuts" that sometimes were used to protect circuit boards sent via courier in my previous employment. I think the idea was they were biodegradeable and/or you could feed them to pets/livestock/random animals if you wanted. (Another project engineer in my department used to eat the things at his desk to freak out secretaries .... probably would fit into category of "random animal"..... )
