Contacting drug services

There are all sorts of things you will want to consider if you decide you're thinking about accessing a drug service. Lots of people turn up not really knowing what services are available, or what they want from the service. Most people who visit a drug service for the first time are a bit concerned about anonymity or confidentiality, and very ambivalent about change.

Most drug services will provide information about drugs, and about the other services they offer, without requiring you to give lots of personal information. If you want to access more substantial services like in-patient detoxification, prescribing services or residential rehabilitation then you can expect people to want to know a little more about you.

In the UK, the National Drugs Helpline is centrally funded and helps people to access appropriate local services. You can call them on 0800 77 66 00 to speak to a real live person and find out more.

Most people find out about local services when they decide to contact someone, and look in the telephone directory. It's a reasonable strategy, and you can do that, now. Look under counseling and advice in the yellow pages.

...and if your best friend ran under a bus, would you? huh? really? Some people come to real harm from the drugs they use. We've put this information here because it might be of interest to you. There is only ever one way to guarantee absolutely that a behavior will not cause you any direct harm. We're not going to tell you not to do drugs. That would be facile, and there are already enough facilities in the world. Whatever you do, take it easy.
