Technical question about WLAN hardware

is there any way of getting software to find out what channels your neighbours' WLANs are set to?

I don't want to do anything naughty with their routers; but I sometimes get interference from other routers (presumably using the same channel) which makes it more difficult to use devices in certain parts of the house.

I expect there is a channel conflict somewhere (the capture effect will mean your router "wins" when you are close to its antenna but others may try and take over when you move the PC to areas with different signal strength...)

You'd have to look it up but I think you need a wireless card that supports promiscuous mode which'll allow you to sniff the networks around you...

not sure; try changing your frequency to the one furthest away from the preset and see if that helps

check the options on the radio part and if it is an advanced version you should be able to force it to only recive and transmit to the prefered router....

thanks for the suggestions. I can't unfortunately set the card to only log on to one router as this computer is used in a variety of different places.

I think I may have finally found a clear router channel as I am not getting the signal drop out as often.

will have a look for that monitoring software though as could come in handy at work...

Try using aerodump....usually its used for fishing for data to gack WEP encryptions but it will find any local networks and tell you the channels.
