Just logged off, checked out the F1 site, and JUST had to come back on to post this. I'd have thought Fangio might have been able to sort out some nose candy, though. Wonder if he'll get a pull and swabbed next time he's recognised by a copper.

this was (and probably still is) even worse in sports where the human is the engine..
until both dope and DNA testing of urine [1] was introduced pro cyclists woudl take a combination of all sorts of drugs, amphet, cocaine, heroin, often mixed together with steroids.. it was called "pot belge" or belgian soup Quote:
[1] the DNA testing is used because it was possible (although logistically complicated) to substitute horse urine for the test (the gender of horse must be the same as the gender of the person being tested) --- Seriantia que quondam fuit Rollandi le Pettour in Hemingeston in comitatu Suff’, pro qua debuit facere die Natali Domini singulis annis coram domino rege unum saltum et sifflettum et unum bumbulum. 15 cans of Adnams.. ![]() Last edited by General Lighting; 28-03-2006 at 02:48 PM.. |

Yeah, didn't the French cyclist team go on strike the other year during the Tour de France over drug testing? I seem to remember quite a lot of people at the time being amused and amazed that they would strike over it; unless, of course, they were guilty of taking performance enhancing drugs.
I've never quite understood what the fuss is about in snooker though. I mean, if Kirk Stevens or Silvino Francisco were coked-up during matches I would have thought it would have made them worse players. Then again, is snooker really a sport, or just a pleasant way of passing an hour or two at the club? Andy W |

me and gl are both keen cyclists, and i find it sad that my favorite sport which is one of the best ways of getting fit has been done down by the use of drugs. i used to watch the tour defrance when i was yunger, and have so much respect and admiration for the cometitors. even getting half way through in last place is a massive achievement. i mean cycling up a mountain is one one thing, but racing up a mountain? proper hardcore. it was a real blow to find out that a lot of these guys are cheating, but not as much as if i had been a competitor myslef. imagine getting beaten by these guys, just to find out they were taking the piss? gutting.
im sure the lads who competed with moss and lost back then are fucking vexed now. talk about robbed. |

We are looking at it with the morals of those born in the 1970s and 1980s when these sorts of drugs had been made illegal. In previous times there was no social stigma attached to the use of stimulants to improve performance - in sport, in business, in society! that was until the late 1960s when the UN anti-drugs committees decided to make amphetamine type stimulants illegal, following the hippy dream exploding in paranoia and violence after crystal meth first appeared, stuff like the death of Tom Simpson and mental problems appearing amongst those who became dependant on "pep pills". In sport until the 1960s it wasn't even seen as cheating - although there were obvious health risks and people sacrificed their health and their lives in pursuit of trophies. and it carried on until recently when the cops started checking out stuff (like the whole 1998 tour de france descending into chaos with cops and customs everywhere, like some inspector clouseau movie). the drugs were mild stuff compared to other things that have happened on the tour like peoples handlebars being sawn through... cycling for your own pleasure and for personal fitness is fun; as would being in a local team. Once it gets to commercial/professional level its a dirty game like any other. |
